An archival journal launched in 1986 for the Materials Research Society, its first such publication. Through our chairman, we specified its unique multidisciplinary design, created its inaugural editorial boards, and negotiated its initial publishing contract with the American Institute of Physics. Although it has since been superseded by ever-more useful electronic key-word search tools, we devised an original-at-the-time unique “Contents by Topic” section that served as a multidisciplinary index to articles based on eight complementary ways to categorize materials research topics.
